About this artwork
In Respiration Minérale, Sophie Dumont explores the balance between earthly density and atmospheric elevation. The composition is anchored in a base of colored layers, constructed through successive impasto and warm harmonies. The lower part of the painting, structured by angular shapes and shades of ochre, brick, and Prussian blue, imposes a solid and carnal rhythm.
In contrast, the upper part opens onto a more ethereal space. The material becomes… lighter, the tones become sandy, almost celestial. A horizontal ochre line, drawn with precision, articulates the transition between these two worlds. The painting invites silent contemplation, between anchoring and breath, between the memory of landscapes and sensitive abstraction.
Framed in an American box (57 x 57 cm framed, natural or black wood of your choice).

Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
