ALPHA
"There is a species on Earth where the cub emerges from the womb and is taken by the hind legs, held upside down and beaten by an adult until it cries."
— C. Rochefort, Les enfants d'abord (1976)
Before the breath, there is silence. Before the light, there is weight. A woman, veiled in red, head bowed — suspended in that last moment of inwardness, still held by what came before. Alpha is the first letter, the first moment, the first threshold.… In neuroscience, it names a gently altered state of consciousness: the world of dreams, of children, of deep presence. This image lives there — in the space before words, before the world rushes in.
Stephanie Gengotti is an Italian-French photographer who, rooted in her background in photojournalism and visual storytelling, crafts evocative images using photography as her primary medium. She employs a cinematic approach that blurs the line between documentary observation and staged, theatrical composition, often working with groups, costumes, and natural light to build layered narratives. Her work delves deeply into themes of family, identity, and the sacred in everyday life, conjuring an atmosphere of intimacy and vulnerability that invites viewers into a reflective, emotional dialogue.
