At the moment this is my personal favorite artwork I created in 2024. (The title refers to a term from the analytical psychology. It means 'a dramatic psychological turnabout.'
My art practices exist in several registers. The foremost register prizes complexity and discovery and its large artworks afford rewards for the viewer who is curious and imaginative. Each quadrant mirrors its counterpart, encapsulating a universe where order and complexity… coexist. This piece invites viewers into a contemplative journey of discovery. As it graces your space, my artwork promises to infuse an energetic and thought-provoking ambiance.

Stephen Calhoun, a self-taught visual artist, utilizes digital photography, digital manipulation, and assemblage in his iterative work. His photographic subjects are built by hand using boxes, found objects and painted materials. Next he uses the pattern-making power of iteration to bring a compelling order to the chaotic subject. The principal aim of his art is to generate an opportunity for the viewer to complete this artistic experiment using their lively imagination, sensitivity and mindful presence. His signature phrase captures this experiential engagement best - "I make the pictures, you make the time".
Expressive patterns require pattern recognition. Pattern recognition is a core cognitive feature of the human species for 40,000+ years. Stephen's universal art banks on this core fact about Homo Sapiens. To this he, by design, adds the opportunity for experience and experiential learning. His intent echoes the mystic Kabir: if it experienced, it is true.
