About this artwork
One of the most famous house in the Netherlands the Rietveld Schroderhuis was designed in 1924 by architect Gerrit Rietveld for Mrs Truss Schroder-Schrader and her 3 children. Attached to the end of a terrace of traditional Dutch houses in the city of Utrecht, the neighbours probably had a nervous breakdown when they saw the plans of the house. Probably the only true De Stijl building in the Netherlands the house looks ultra modern even by today's…
standards. The shell is constructed from brick and plaster and accommodates massive windows flooding the whole house with light. In order to give her children maximum freedom, on the inside of the house Mrs Truss Schroder insisted on large open-plan dynamic spaces that could be partitioned off if necessary by sliding walls and doors and panels. UNESCO says this: 'With its radical approach to design and the use of space, the Rietveld Schröderhuis occupies a seminal position in the development of architecture in the modern age.'

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
