I created this piece because I needed to work out some of the trauma from my evangelical childhood. This is a visual representation of the bible verse Isaiah 1:18: "says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." After this verse it goes on to describe how if you disobey you will be 'devoured by the sword'. I wanted to translate some of the emotion and fear… that was instilled in me as a child from being taught this. There are lotus leaves as symbols of peace, the lamb as wool, and the 'bride' bathed in blood and a faceless mask represents the absolutely unknown, but supposedly meaningful presence of god. I also incorporated spray paint stencils of snowflakes and cut out the flowers from pages of the bible.
Stina Henslee is a painter and visual artist whose vibrant background spans Helsinki, Berlin, Chicago, and Dubuque, working with ink, watercolor, acrylic, spray paint, gouache, collage, and printmaking. Her work skillfully juggles tight, controlled techniques with loose, emotive brushwork, balancing the emotional with the whimsically absurd. Through her art, she channels catharsis, exploring life’s most intense highs and lows, infusing each piece with raw emotional depth and moments of surprising lightness.
