About this artwork
I created this piece because I needed to work out some of the trauma from my evangelical childhood. This is a visual representation of the bible verse Isaiah 1:18: "says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." After this verse it goes on to describe how if you disobey you will be 'devoured by the sword'. I wanted to translate some of the emotion and fear…
that was instilled in me as a child from being taught this. There are lotus leaves as symbols of peace, the lamb as wool, and the 'bride' bathed in blood and a faceless mask represents the absolutely unknown, but supposedly meaningful presence of god. I also incorporated spray paint stencils of snowflakes and cut out the flowers from pages of the bible.
