About this artwork
After the discovery of America, many Europeans left their homelands in search of a new and better life. It was the promised land. This migration and conquest brought not only hardship, as part of a settlement imposed by force of arms, but also the migrant's confusion: the inner conflict of not knowing where one truly belongs. It was a struggle against the uncertainty of a victorious destiny in an unknown land, and the repressed longing to return… to one's place of origin. Like a horse moving in one direction while its rider looks in the opposite direction.
The current migration crisis affecting numerous countries in the Americas (including my own, Cuba) carries the weight of an age-old stigma. The migrant's dilemma—like that of the conquerors—is that, all too often, they don't know where they're going because they've forgotten where they came from.
Sua Guerra, trained at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Cuba, has worked in metal, wood, and marble sculpture, pyrography, drawing, and installations for over 20 years. He uses realist, surrealist, and hyperrealist techniques, influenced by magical realism, with remarkable virtuosity in detail and execution. His works explore philosophy, psychology, literature, and mythology, and convey profound emotions such as rebellion, human cruelty, and the confrontation between reality and the mask, generating an intense and cathartic experience of reflection in the viewer.
