About this artwork
In Gaze I turn a parrot into a symbolic observer through simplified forms and vibrant color.
Intelligent, curious, and able to mimic us, the parrot sits between the natural world and human society. I reduced its features to bold geometric shapes and let a single enlarged eye become the focal point. That eye is more than a physical feature — it's a symbol of awareness and perception. Instead of presenting the bird as something to be looked at, I reversed… the roles: the parrot looks back, creating a silent exchange between the work and the viewer.
Through that encounter I want to ask how we engage with nature. When we observe it, photograph it, and try to understand it, are we truly seeing it — or projecting ourselves onto it?
Balancing play and contemplation, Gaze explores looking as a mutual experience rather than a one-sided act.

Suliya Ainiwaer is a Uyghur painter and visual artist with classical oil painting training from Xinjiang Arts University. She merges gestural, expressive brushwork with tactile impasto techniques and bold, daring colors, balancing disciplined structure with contemporary abstraction centered on the human face—especially the eye. Her evocative compositions create a charged space of emotional longing, probing the mysteries of identity and conveying the haunting distance between the visible self and the inner life that can never be fully known.
