About this artwork
My connection with Wada culture began during my college years when I first came to Pune and stayed in an old Wada. From that moment onward, I became deeply attracted to the atmosphere and architectural beauty of these spaces, which eventually shaped my unique painting style.
The architecture of Pune’s Wadas, their communal structure, courtyard culture, and rhythmic wooden doors continue to inspire me. Old houses, traditional markets, and silent heritage… spaces helped develop my artistic sensitivity.
Another strong source of inspiration is my desire to preserve a heritage that is slowly disappearing with time.
Suresh Gulage works primarily with painting, drawing upon her formal training in fine art and art education from Pune’s prestigious institutions. She employs field studies, sketches, and textural explorations, creating large-scale canvases that contemporize the evocative architecture of Pune’s old Wadas. Her style intertwines intricate details of doors, courtyards, and wooden carvings, reverently interpreting Maharashtra’s fading heritage. Gulage’s artworks emanate nostalgia, reverence, and a longing to preserve collective memory, enveloping viewers in the emotional atmosphere of historic spaces.
