About this artwork
In these large-format canvas works, I explore structures that create open spaces for thought and experience – not least for subjective memories of places, landscapes, and natural phenomena. The multiple overlapping, glazed applications of paint create a sense of depth that allows the works to oscillate between picture plane and space, between concrete art and poetic associations.
For me, the key is reducing the composition to a pre-planned structure… and deciding on the brush width – all other decisions are made during the creative process. The painting thus develops on the canvas as I work. I try to find a rhythm and, of course, I have experience working with colors, so I can always anticipate several steps. I use pure colors: red, green, yellow, and blue. The mixed tones and color nuances emerge on the canvas. Openness, movement, and space are important to me.
Susanne Ackermann works primarily with acrylic on canvas and possesses an impressive academic background in painting. Through glazing and overlapping applications of paint, she develops complex, abstract structures, creating an extraordinary sense of spatial depth by layering clear, pure colors and thus revealing the creative process. Her works defy easy categorization and invite the viewer to experience, with wonder, subjective memories of places and natural phenomena, and to engage in a sensual spatial experience.
