About this artwork
If I were to tell this story as it happened, I would lose it. When my grandparents and I visited the Black Sea when I was 2, we left my first teddy bear on the shore. Then there were other toys and another teddy bear, but how I would have dreamed of keeping that first one and having it with me! I would have taken care of it, sewed it up if it started to tear, made patches, and changed the sawdust if necessary. Even now, when I am over 50, I remember… it and regret that I could not give it to my son when he was little. But I still keep his first teddy bear. Perhaps now it is even more important to me than to my son. But it is essential. And someday, he will understand this, too. And he will keep his child's first teddy bear.
Born from a book-filled environment, Svetlana Rumak mediates her vision primarily through acrylics, supplemented with pencils, ink, and collages. She's forged an individualistic style, coalescing mixed media techniques within symbolism, a visual narrative reflecting upon womanhood and its many facets. Through her works, she unfolds a "fan of reality", instilling in viewers a profound contemplation on gender roles and spiritual mysticism.
