Inspired by Tawaraya Sōtatsu’s Wind God and Thunder God Folding Screen, this diptych explores the harmony of nature and yin-yang philosophy through the contrast of Wind and Thunder Gods. Influenced by my grandfather, a collector of ancient artifacts, I developed the “rusted foil technique” to age silver leaf with a patinated texture, embracing wabi-sabi aesthetics. Echoing Sōtatsu’s innovative tarashikomi and Rinpa roots, the piece uses rusted foil… to imprint time’s passage and push contemporary art’s boundaries. Gold leaf reflects light as clouds, while a jet-black background and rusted silver leaf evoke shadow. Traditional Japanese materials bring the deities to life, expressing hope amid darkness. Fused with Middle Eastern influences, the work blends oriental-modern style with themes of time, light, and shadow to evoke nature’s power and inspire quiet reflection.
