About this artwork
My 'Grace N' Grit' series was inspired by my extensive travels around the world and the women I met.
It is a Portrait Series of Imaginary Portraits Honouring the Sacred Balance of Strength and Sensitivity within Women.
We are not here to choose between softness and power. We are here to claim both. In my paintings I want strength to not be defined by hardness but shown through the eyes that dare to feel. Or in the neck that tilts in thought. Or… by proudly wearing what others may think is strange or unusual. Almost always with the earring that could be a tunnel into the freedom of the sky, or into the ‘hotness’ of passion...
My Grace n’ Grit women do not shrink. They stand — raw, resplendent, feeling everything, incomplete — yet definitely enough!
'Black Hat 2' is one of my more recent paintings in this series. She is wise beyond her years, kind to a fault, but no fool. She loves people and even though she's been through a lot, she keeps her soft heart open for her friends.
Tessa Thonett, an accomplished painter with a rich, international background and formal training at Chelsea School of Art, primarily works in oils, using both brushes and palette knives. Her vibrant technique blends textured impasto, flowing forms, and bold colour relationships, often stylized to emphasize emotion over realism. Her imaginary portraits of strong women in her "Grace n' Grit" series, explore the dynamic interplay of vulnerability and strength, conveying a profound celebration of resilience, introspection, and the quiet power within femininity.
Tessa principally paints portraits, both commissioned and for her enjoyment, as she has always been fascinated by faces and people, wishing to portray their spirit or 'essence' in her paintings of them. Her portraits, with their vibrant colors and textured brushwork, are testaments to her belief that a portrait should capture more than just a likeness; it should reveal the inner light and unique character of the subject."
