The Unfurling Sound balances the Dao De Jing’s notion of the “ten thousand things” against open fields of yellow light. From apparent silence, a multitude of colours emerges, echoing an ancient song carried by hills, wind, and water. The brushwork privileges process over appearance: gestures flow, pool, and disperse, allowing forms to arise as temporary condensations of qì. Space remains open and non-hierarchical; the eye drifts freely, guided by rhythmic visual currents rather than fixed perspective. The palette subtly reflects the Five Phases (wuxing, 五行), sustaining a dynamic equilibrium of energies. In keeping with the Chinese aspiration to “capture the spirit beyond the form” (yi zai xiang wai, 意在象外), the work inhabits a meeting point between the ancient and the avant-garde, seeking clarity and rhythm within the density of contemporary experience.

Tillian is an award-winning artist based in Australia whose paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions nationally. Through his works, Tillian explores themes related to anxiety, longing, and ecstatic recognition. In his artistic process, he favors using acrylics and gilding on wood. Tillian's practice bridges painting, mythopoetics, and ecological reflection. Deeply attuned to the natural and spiritual landscapes of the highland landscapes south of Sydney, Tillian often seeks to paint what resists depiction: the numinous, the mythic, the relational pulse between body and terrain. The artist synthesises elements of abstraction, post-symbolism, and visionary ecology to build a new visual lexicon of sacred land.
