About this artwork
The painting "Eternit" from the exhibition "Intimate Lucidity" (Galerie Bäckerstrasse 4, Vienna) is a typical work from my early phase—the "duochrome" style of painting, in which I always use only two colors: one for the grounding and one for the clean, well-defined lines, which I apply with the help of Chinese chopsticks ("chop stick ductus"). This creates a kind of relief that lends depth to the painting.
The image shows a landscape with the roofs… of a factory in the foreground. In my opinion, the beauty of a landscape or a view is difficult or even impossible to capture, neither with photography nor with painting. My approach is not to capture this scenic aesthetic, but to replace it with another aesthetic—with clean and informed lines, with the color contrast of dusty pink and brilliant white—in other words, with graphic and minimalist means whose clarity and clarity I greatly appreciate.
Tobias Gossow, born and living in Vienna, uses acrylic paints and innovative techniques, particularly his self-developed "chop-stick" technique, which uses Chinese chopsticks to create relief-like lines on canvas. In his work, he combines a representational, realistic style with a search for abstract quality; his themes range from urban architecture to nature and their intersections. His works exude a magical, enchanting atmosphere and convey a deep fascination with the beauty and complexity of the world.
