About this artwork
A little girl holding a lantern has stumbled upon the moon that has fallen from the sky and landed in the forest. Is she L'il Luna? Or is the moon itself, which appears to be quite small, actually L'il Luna. It matters not.
This painting was great fun to create though also quite tedious. The idea for it came when my youngest son presented me a book for my birthday called, "The Moon - From Inner Worlds to Outer Space". It features all kinds of images… and paintings of the moon, which has been a frequent image used in many of my paintings. Paging through the book, it got me wondering about stumbling upon the moon myself, up close and personal. What would I think? I began searching for images and ultimately combined and interpreted a few different ones to concoct this startling image. Though dark, it also holds the promise of magic. To me, this painting is like a fairy tale and continues my quest to paint the impossible - or at least the highly improbable!
« I love to paint the impossible, or at least the highly improbable. I want my work to make you think, if it brings a smile to your face, that's even better. »
Tom Blood is an award-winning American artist whose paintings have been exhibited in the United States. Inspired by surrealism, especially by the works of René Magritte, many of his paintings have featured a man in a bowler hat, which is part of his on-going homage to the Belgian master. Blood enjoys painting "what seemed like it couldn't be, only it looked like it actually was".
