About this artwork
The Shape of Memory explores the fragile boundary between presence and disappearance. Through the figure of a horse—a timeless symbol of instinct, freedom, and life force—the work reflects on how memory transforms what was once tangible into something increasingly ethereal.
Rather than depicting the animal itself, the painting seeks to evoke the sensation of remembering: fragments that remain sharp while others dissolve into atmosphere, texture,… and silence. The horse becomes a trace, a presence that fades, suspended between matter and emotion.
The work speaks about impermanence and about that which physically disappears but continues to live within us as memory, instinct, and echo.

Tomas David is a self-taught painter with a background in medicine who uses oil, acrylic, spray paint, and pastel on large canvases to create striking works. His techniques fuse the rigor of classical figurative painting with raw gestures and textures characteristic of urban art, reinterpreting canonical compositions with a contemporary and disruptive energy. His works convey a vibrant tension between order and chaos, inviting the viewer to experience the urgency and fragility of the moment before collapse, where there is still something to see and save.
