This is a high-quality Giclée print on Hahnemühle German Etching paper (310gsm), known for its velvety tactile feel and rich artistic texture.
On May 5th, a day traditionally dedicated in Japan to celebrating children's growth, I found myself questioning: who defines the shape of "health"? In the transparent tanks of social media, we constantly cultivate our identities, adapting to the "managed waters" of others' gazes.
Inspired by Ryunosuke Akutagawa's… short story "Three Treasures," I released these three koi fish and nine traditional markings onto the paper. Within this cultivated order, these three alone refuse to wear the tailored patterns of correctness. They radiate light of their own will, rippling the unknown surface of the future. I invite you to pause for a moment and listen to this pure rhythm. For only after shedding the scales of cultivated falsehood does the treasure of the true "self" reside.
Koei Tomoe (巴煌詠) explores the theme of "Farmed Identity." Using "NISHIKI_GOI"—creatures bred for appreciation—he questions if our identities are authentic or curated. His style fuses Japanese tradition with modern graphic design, using Suzuka ink to capture the koi's stoic struggle.
Referencing the "Dragon Gate" legend, Tomoe depicts the moment of transcending ornamental boundaries. This narrative of breaking out of the "tank" resonates with those in high-pressure environments; his works are collected by professional athletes and leaders who see their own breakthrough reflected in his lines.
[Summary] Why I create: To explore the tension between "curated beauty" and the "authentic self."
Who I reach: Individuals fighting to transcend their environments.
Style: Graphic precision meets Japanese tradition. A visual anchor for the ambitious soul.
