About this artwork
In this piece, I blend surrealism and realism to explore perception. The zebra's shadow reveals a hidden truth, inviting viewers to question what lies beneath appearances. Painted in oil, it emits a calm yet thought-provoking energy, perfect for sparking curiosity and wonder in any space. This artwork brings a futuristic reflection on self-awareness to life.
In the work the theme of the looming extinction of an increasing number of animal species… emerges. The choice of the zebra is significant: it is not an animal usually placed at the center of environmental debates, where more “noble” species such as elephants or tigers often take the spotlight. Through this choice, I draw attention to the fact that one day even the so-called “unproblematic” species will probably vanish, surviving only in stories. Their physical presence will be lost, even though the awareness of their former existence will remain. What will be preserved is only a trace — a shadow of their past.
Ulla Žibert, a painter and visual artist with a background in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, uses both painting and sculptural concepts to explore perception. She intertwines mimetic and refined flatness, distorting shadows and familiar everyday motifs to create playful, conceptually rich spaces where reality and illusion collide. Her works provoke the viewer to question habitual perceptions and surface realities. With nuanced wordplay and unexpected visual shifts, she conveys a sense of subtle instability, inspiring viewers to find meaning in the seemingly ordinary and inviting contemplation long after experiencing her art.
