About this artwork
In this painting, I wanted to convey a tension between abstraction and figuration. The central silhouette is not defined: it appears and disappears, as if struggling to exist in the material. I like to work with these areas of uncertainty because they allow me to suggest a passage, a journey that is never completely accomplished.
Color plays an essential role here: deep, almost earthy reds contrast with diffuse, more airy greens, like an oscillation… between weight and lightness, between rootedness and openness. The texture, which I build in successive layers, is for me a memory inscribed in the surface: each trace tells of a resistance, a gesture, a scar.
Through this work, I seek less to represent than to evoke an inner state. What matters to me is to open a space where the spectator can confront his own emotions, between shadow and light, strength and fragility.
After several years of painting frescoes, Ursula Matella chose to return to the easel to explore a more intimate and free expression. Between abstraction and figuration, her painting is born from gesture and direct contact with the material. The layers of color, the traces of the knife and the textures become the language of a raw emotion. In his paintings, light mixes with silence, shapes appear then fade, like fragile memories or inner presences. His work is rooted in feeling more than in reason - a constant dialogue between mastery and abandonment, between construction and erasure. Through this instinctive process, Ursula seeks to reveal the essence of emotion, to translate inner states, the traces of a memory, the fragile presence of a being or a moment.
