About this artwork
This painting was created from my own photographic notes in Lunning, Shetland. I was fascinated by the turbulent, restless sea in contrast to the stable, serene rock formations. The North Sea appears in shades of gray, blue, green, and ochre, while the sea spray is rendered in subtle gradations of white. Layers of gray clouds thicken in the sky. The lower part of the rocky coast and the blocky rocks in the water display nuances of brown, black, and… gray, while the vegetation on the cliffs glows in various shades of green. I applied the oil paint thickly with a brush to emphasize the textural qualities of the vegetation, rocks, and water. The support is a self-stretched, four-layer primed canvas. The edges are painted so that the painting can be hung without a frame. A steel cable on the back allows for secure hanging. My signature is on the front.
« I prefer to paint outside. Wind, light, and air can be felt in my pictures. »
Ute Meyer is a German artist whose work has been recognized nationally and internationally, including in Denmark and the USA. She prefers to work outdoors and uses classic techniques of oil and watercolor painting. Her creative process is strongly influenced by changing weather conditions and lighting, which can either speed up or slow down her painting flow. She captures the special mood of the day in her pictures. In addition to plein air painting, Ute Meyer draws inspiration from her own photographs and everyday experiences, which she implements both abstractly and figuratively. Characteristic features of her works are clarity, liveliness, depth and breadth, which run like a common thread through her work.
