About this artwork
I created this artwork after visiting a Rembrandt exhibition at Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in 2021. I got inspired by the painter's self portraits in blue colour made as an experiment of him expressing himself in a mirror in a candle light environment. The fact that he was mimicking different states of being, led me to create my own depiction of him at home on my own canvas.
The use of copper colour is not coming only complimentary to the nuances… of blue, but also as a homage to the techniques that the painter was using to produce lithographies through the copper plates.
Trying to depict him, I ended up depicting myself as coming out to light, getting to know the world ( maybe the artworld) and its challenges. The expression is one of awe, containing a bit of fear as well.
Valentina Barbieru, a painter with a background in both dentistry and art, works primarily with oil, watercolour, and pastels. Her eclectic techniques encompass symbols, abstract themes, botanical studies, Islamic patterns, and expressive portraiture. Deeply inspired by confidence, nature, healing, and the evolution of humanity, she weaves rich narratives into her diverse styles. Her works radiate reassurance, empowerment, and a profound sense of connection, aiming to inspire both personal and collective transformation.
