About this artwork
I’ve always loved the sense of life in marketplace scenes — the contrasts, the variety, and the endless stories unfolding in every corner. From a painter’s point of view, it’s simply joyful to play with different surfaces, objects, and people. The challenge lies in choosing a focus, because one snapshot can inspire countless paintings.
For this piece, I started from a photo reference but refined the composition through an ink sketch, selecting a… few compelling figures: the sporty lady passing by, the one deeply absorbed in her thoughts, and, in the background, “Mrs. Magoo,” whom I couldn’t help but fall in love with. These diverse characters — like the flea market objects surrounding them — are all searching for their own little treasures. Through vibrant color and subtle light, I wanted to capture that sense of discovery, connection, and the quiet beauty of everyday life.
Valentina Radice is a self-taught painter with over 20 years of experience, trained privately in Italy and Germany, working primarily in oil using the alla prima technique, as well as gouache and tempera. She fuses expressive brushwork and palette knife application to create dynamic textures, employing en plein air methods to capture the fleeting vibrancy of urban life. Her impressionistic style, rooted in street photography and keen awareness of light, transforms ordinary moments into compelling visual narratives. Her paintings radiate energy and aim to evoke the movement, emotion, and atmosphere that fill the everyday.
