About this artwork
‘Damaged goods’ refers to products that are broken, defective, or in poor
condition, making them less valuable. When a person is damaged goods, they are
seen as socially undesirable, emotionally broken, or reputationally ruined; term for
someone considered "less than perfect".
This body of work was made as a reflection of relationship women have with their
bodies, minds and nature. As Besser van del Kolk writes in The Body Keeps the
Score, our… bodies store the overwhelm, burnout, anxiety, heartbreak. Parts of us
get broken, parts of us get mended. Everything stays within us, melts, cracks and
burns us. It often not visible on the surface, and as we go through life and collect
our war wounds, we somehow become the damaged goods, the collateral
damage of society’s standards. This work considers how lived experience
accumulates in the body, not necessarily as adversity, but as transformation,
imprint, and memory, a living archive.
