About this artwork
Ace of Texas is a gold on black portrait that turns a classic card reveal into a Texas emblem. A figure faces forward beneath an ornate cowboy hat, eyes locked on the viewer, while four aces fan upward to conceal the lower face. Each card carries a cut out Texas motif, shifting the deck from a game object into a set of symbols.
The piece balances realism and graphic design: engraved detailing in the hat, hair, and hands contrasts with broad black… negative space, so the image reads instantly from a distance and rewards close viewing with texture and crisp edge work. The 18k gold surface catches light like metal, not paint, so small changes in angle animate the highlights across the cards and hat.
I made this work as a study of identity, risk, and regional mythology. The cards hide the voice and amplify the icon.
