About this artwork
Oil on circular canvas, 2024
In this work, I wanted to capture the beginning and end of life in a single image. The old woman embodies the wisdom that silently passes on her legacy to the next generations. Her gesture is one of tenderness and devotion: the knowledge and love that sustain the human cycle.
The circular canvas was chosen deliberately. The circle symbolizes eternity, time without beginning or end, the constant return of life to itself.… Through this format, I seek to ensure that the viewer's gaze finds no limits, that it flows and returns like existence itself: from childhood to old age, and from old age back to childhood. Eternity thus becomes a visual ode to the love that never dies, to the root that bears fruit, to the sacred bond between those who open and close the cycle of existence. It is one of the core pieces of the exhibition "From El Salvador. Pigments of My Land," conceived as a symbol of continuity, hope, and heritage.
Vilma Márquez, trained in fine arts, uses oil, watercolor, pastel, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media, crafting many of her materials by hand. Her figurative and symbolic language blends classical techniques with contemporary experimentation, emphasizing detail, intense atmospheres, and a narrative thrust that explores memory, identity, and the human condition. Her works convey profound emotions such as dignity in pain, resilience, and hope, inviting us to reflect on relationships, feminine strength, and vulnerability from an honest and poignant perspective.
