About this artwork
"I Don’t Want to Go to Mars reflects on the desire to remain rooted in the here and now. A woman sits in silence within an empty room, her gaze turned inward while a lush green landscape waits just beyond the window. The painting contrasts confinement and possibility, suggesting that renewal and meaning are found not in escape to distant worlds, but in the stillness of our own."
In this piece, I poured my feelings of quiet longing and hesitation… onto the canvas. Using oil to capture light and shadow, I wanted to evoke a moment of introspection, where the outside world calls but comfort still holds.
Walter Dermul is a professional oil painter with a background in marketing and a lifelong fascination for the arts. He uses alla prima techniques on canvas, focusing on representational and deeply figurative subjects—solitary figures, interiors, and architecture—rendered in muted, psychological palettes of blues and greys. His paintings explore themes of memory, transition, and human connection, evoking a quiet introspection that invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences, lingering between intimacy and ambiguity.
