- Famous Artist
Werner Berges was a German painter and a highly influential figure in Germany’s Pop Art movement during the 1960s and 1970s. In contrast to the American Pop Art artists like Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein, Berges did not openly characterize himself within any genre or style. Berges was not concerned with gaining popularity at home or abroad. He often signed only the back of his canvases in order to place attention on the work instead of himself. From 1963 to 1968 he studied painting at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin under Alexander Camaro. In 1965 Berges slowly turned to figurative painting. Works from this period show anthropomorphic figures, which, at first glance, are often not recognizable as such. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that Berger found his signature Pop style.
