About this artwork
The full title is: A self-portrait examining a life-form with no consciousness but better prospects of survival. Self-portrait examining an OHP slide of the mite, demodex follicularum. The mites spend much of their time burrowed head-down inside human hair follicles, (consuming) dead skin cells and sebum. At night, they (move) out of the follicle to mate and lay ... eggs. Demodex mites have been associated with multiple ocular conditions including chronic blepharitis, keratoconjunctivitis, chalazia, keratitis, endophthalmitis, and ... periocular basal cell carcinoma (ibid.). The OHP is based on a scanning, colorized electron micrograph (reproduced in the journal cited above). My interest in mites arose from a conversation with a Ph.D student making a study of the diversity of these interesting, microscopic arthropods.
