About this artwork
For 20 years, Harkrader painted tradition landscapes and streetscapes. This painting represents his transition into abstracting the language of objective compositions. Energetic, erratic, and powerful brushstrokes, unlike any the artist had ever expressed, seemed to evolve out of nada; an uncontrollable hand/arm movement that mimicked the energy of the Big Apple, a favorite city for he and El. Painted in 03, two years after 9-11, lingering visual…
memory may have also contributed to an unconscious action of abstracting by the artist. Turbulent reflections on the wet nocturnal street may be conveying distress. The active, but oddly empty gray sky could be a horizon once occupied by twin towers.
