About this artwork
Harkrader captured the strength and wisdom of two iconic figures against a backdrop of historical significance. I chose realism to convey the deep respect and enduring legacy these men represent. Their poised, dignified forms radiate a profound connection to the past, yet still resonate with contemporary relevance. This painting not only honors their contributions but also invokes reflection and inspiration. Left: Standing erect, regal, and confident,…
a gentleman, Booker T. Washington, founder of Tuskegee Institute and later, advisor to Christiansburg Industrial Institute. An educator and author, in front of the Hill School on Zion Hill, now High Street. Right: Rev. Charles S. Schaeffer, former Union Soldier and Baptist Minister from Philadelphia, and founder of Christiansburg Industrial Institute, confident and stately, in front of the historic Schaeffer Memorial Church. Washington and Schaeffer probably never met one another. This painting is symbolic.
