About this artwork
Created during the spring 2020 confinement, "Concrete" is a visceral reflection on urban isolation and the resilience of the human spirit. As the city closed in, Shumska translated the feeling of being surrounded by rising walls into a powerful abstract narrative. The painting explores the physical and psychological density of the urban environment—the "concrete" that separates us from the world.
However, the artwork is not about despair, but about… perception. Shumska emphasizes that every wall, no matter how solid, has a crack or a hole. This piece poses a vital philosophical question: are we able to see these openings, and do we have the courage to use them? Through a sophisticated interplay of texture and shadow, "Concrete" captures the moment where limitation meets opportunity, offering a poignant reminder that light always finds a way through.

« I work with painting, performance art, installation, and dance. I'm interested in the research of spaces with human presence and looking for situations that reveal dual reality and ambiguity. »
Yaryna Shumska is a multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges the gap between performance and abstract painting, creating what she calls an "archive of action."
She is a prize-winning Ukrainian artist whose works have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in Poland, France, Spain and the United States. Her artistic geography is truly global, ranging from the Venice International Performance Art Week and Tokyo to Bangkok, Barcelona, and the Arctic Action in Svalbard. A significant place in her practice is occupied by abstract painting from the 2008–2020 period, which served as a foundation for exploring the canvas as a space for "inhabiting" action. In these works, color and texture function not merely as visual elements, but as mediums for internal rhythm and energy. These canvases laid the groundwork for her current practice, where painting is transformed into a direct imprint of physical presence.
