About this artwork
This artwork serves as the emotional anchor to the narrative explored in the solo exhibition "HOLDING ONE'S BREATH" (Lviv Municipal Art Center, 2025).
"I Hug You Tight" is a pictorial reflection of the namesake performance. The composition focuses on a vertical axis—a rootless white column, echoing a paper roll from the original act. In this work, emptiness gains weight, becoming a vessel for hidden experiences and time. It is a visualization of… an intimate gesture, filled with longing and vulnerability, that marks a return to life. What was once the rustle of paper in a park has been transformed into color and line, into movement and strength. An embrace is a way of bridging the invisible distance.

« I work with painting, performance art, installation, and dance. I'm interested in the research of spaces with human presence and looking for situations that reveal dual reality and ambiguity. »
Yaryna Shumska is a multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges the gap between performance and abstract painting, creating what she calls an "archive of action."
She is a prize-winning Ukrainian artist whose works have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in Poland, France, Spain and the United States. Her artistic geography is truly global, ranging from the Venice International Performance Art Week and Tokyo to Bangkok, Barcelona, and the Arctic Action in Svalbard. A significant place in her practice is occupied by abstract painting from the 2008–2020 period, which served as a foundation for exploring the canvas as a space for "inhabiting" action. In these works, color and texture function not merely as visual elements, but as mediums for internal rhythm and energy. These canvases laid the groundwork for her current practice, where painting is transformed into a direct imprint of physical presence.
