About this artwork
Originally painted in 2011 as a classic study of form and tradition, this still life underwent a radical conceptual transformation in 2022. What began as a simple jar of cucumbers—a staple of Ukrainian domestic life—unexpectedly evolved into a symbol of grassroots resistance and self-defense.
Following the events of 2022, a viral story emerged in Ukraine about a woman neutralizing a drone with a jar of preserves. While partly a legend and a "war-time… joke," it became a powerful metaphor for the resourcefulness and bravery of ordinary people. Recognizing this shift in meaning, the artist returned to the canvas in 2022 to add a significant detail: the year on the etiquette.
By dating the object 11 years after its creation, the artist captures the moment when a domestic object is drafted into history, where the peaceful tradition of the harvest meets the stark necessity of defense. It is a work about memory, the re-evaluation of the "everyday," and the resilient spirit.

« I work with painting, performance art, installation, and dance. I'm interested in the research of spaces with human presence and looking for situations that reveal dual reality and ambiguity. »
Yaryna Shumska is a multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges the gap between performance and abstract painting, creating what she calls an "archive of action."
She is a prize-winning Ukrainian artist whose works have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in Poland, France, Spain and the United States. Her artistic geography is truly global, ranging from the Venice International Performance Art Week and Tokyo to Bangkok, Barcelona, and the Arctic Action in Svalbard. A significant place in her practice is occupied by abstract painting from the 2008–2020 period, which served as a foundation for exploring the canvas as a space for "inhabiting" action. In these works, color and texture function not merely as visual elements, but as mediums for internal rhythm and energy. These canvases laid the groundwork for her current practice, where painting is transformed into a direct imprint of physical presence.
