About this artwork
Created during the quiet transition of November and December 2020, "Winter in the Suburbs" is an imaginative abstract landscape of Yaryna Shumska’s native Lviv. This painting captures the unique atmosphere of the city’s outskirts as they embrace the first chills of winter. Shumska translates the familiar geography of her home into a lyrical arrangement of white, blue, and grey tones.
The artwork is defined by a sophisticated combination of textures… and surfaces, mimicking the frost-covered earth and the misty Ukrainian sky. It is a work of deep personal resonance that invites the viewer to explore the boundary between memory and abstraction. With its cool, serene palette and rich tactile quality, this piece brings a sense of peaceful, wintery elegance and local heritage to any contemporary collection.
« I work with painting, performance art, installation, and dance. I'm interested in the research of spaces with human presence and looking for situations that reveal dual reality and ambiguity. »
Yaryna Shumska is a multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges the gap between performance and abstract painting, creating what she calls an "archive of action." She is a prize-winning Ukrainian artist whose works have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in Poland, France, Spain and the United States. Her artistic geography is truly global, ranging from the Venice International Performance Art Week and Tokyo to Bangkok, Barcelona, and the Arctic Action in Svalbard. A significant place in her practice is occupied by abstract painting from the 2008–2020 period, which served as a foundation for exploring the canvas as a space for "inhabiting" action. In these works, color and texture function not merely as visual elements, but as mediums for internal rhythm and energy. These canvases laid the groundwork for her current practice, where painting is transformed into a direct imprint of physical presence.
