Born into a family of woodworking craftsmen, I was always captivated by the subtle red hues of lacquer trees as I watched traditional furniture made from them. The rich, passionate red, reflecting Korea's warm and fervent spirit, merged with images of my hometown, so in my early paintings, vibrant shades of red were predominant.
I simplified the scenes of my hometown that remain in my memory—rivers, pine trees, turtles, birds, cows, thatched-roof… houses, and even our playful childhood selves—and expressed them in a way that feels both primitive and familiar.
Youn Sung Park, a Korean artist sculpted by a lineage of woodworking artisans, chiefly communicates through paint. His work, glowing with bold red tones and characterized by abstract landscapes and ripple-patterned textures, mirrors techniques from ancestral cave paintings whilst nestling in a uniquely Korean palette. Potently, his creations serve as an introspective tribute to his homeland, evoking comforting feelings of warmth and familiarity.
