About this artwork
For this small painting, I deliberately chose a limited palette of cool colors to express isolation and mystery. The background is done in acrylic, using a wash technique, so it's heavily diluted with water.
The checkerboard composition responds to my desire to organize space with more rectilinear shapes, as is my custom.
With its strange silhouette and ambiguous arm gesture, the character seems to float and search for its way.
The white, cloud-like… shapes serve to situate the character within a space. I'm reminded of Henri Michaux's poem, "I was born with a hole in my head." Why not also evoke the world of Samuel Beckett, Godot, or Molloy? Quite a program.

Yves Minssart, painter, draftsman, and sculptor, draws on his background as an architect and his passion for art history to explore primarily drawing, metal engraving, and sculpture, while grounding his approach in a profound experience of minimalism influenced by Zen. His style combines abstraction, dreamlike imagery, and subtle textures, sketching plays of rhythm and bare forms reminiscent of surrealist universes. His work invites contemplation of enigmatic spaces, revealing solitude, fragility, and the sensitive search for a place in the world.
