A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - In ‘Live Sketches,’ Evgeniy Monahov approaches painting as direct record rather than studio construction.
This selection brings together works from his on-site sketching across Spain and Tibet — streets, riverbanks, monasteries, village paths. Each image is executed in immediate response to its surroundings, before light shifts or figures disperse.
Brushwork remains visible. Edges stay open. Color establishes structure quickly — ultramarine shadow against sunlit facade, a band of red securing an interior, sky reduced to a single decisive plane. Detail is secondary to placement.
Though modest in scale, these works are not preliminary. They function as resolved observations within an ongoing visual record.
Executed on site, each image holds the conditions of its making — light, proportion, spatial tension — without adjustment.
No revision. Just placement.
