Saudade is what defines these drawers of a time that has already passed, that has already flown away. And although it may seem melancholic, I experience saudade differently. Personally, I am filled with a sense of gratitude—a recognition of how happy my life has been. Because saudade is always for the best of what we have lived.
We all feel it.
In this painting, there are two female figures. The figure at the top has as the base of her body the… most beautiful arch in Lisbon, a watchful memory that observes and shelters. The figure below is embraced by the figure above, who, having immigrated to another country, feels saudade, internalizing and experiencing the feeling in her body—the reason her eyes are closed.
