About this artwork
Magnolias symbolize aesthetics in nature. Their shoots and blossoms resemble spatial drawings. I am continually inspired by the poetic appeal of these plants and choose them as my motif. The branches of a white magnolia entwine against an abstract gray-beige background. The light-filled atmosphere creates a light, airy effect, and the overlapping layers of color give the background a deep, multicolored shimmer. The golden accents on the plant are…
particularly beautiful, glimmering when the light hits them. The watercolor-like lightness of the blossom and accents of pink, violet, and green make the work special and elegant. Accents of bold pink and black lend the work presence. I create additional structure and vibrancy through graphic elements using oil pastels. Since I make the colors myself from pure allspice, the grainy pigment can still be seen upon close inspection. The stretcher frame is hand-stretched.

« Each of my pictures should appear as if a little bit of color had happened by chance, formed into a composition in a miraculous way, but could disappear again at any time. »
Alexandra Hiltl is a German painter and draftswoman whose works are widely exhibited worldwide. Her art moves between abstraction and figuration and is not specifically concerned with botanical or physiological accuracy, but rather with the "atmosphere of the moment". The beauty of living things touches her deeply, and Hiltl compositions reflect an emotional imagery. Working primarily in watercolor technique, her artistic practice requires extreme concentration as she allows the color to flow along with concentrated shaping.
