About this artwork
The painting "Nachtsee" reproduces the magical atmosphere of a mild night by the water. Several female figures, some of which are drawn on top of one another, are located in front of an abstract surface in gray, white and blue tones. The left part of the painting is lighter and flooded with light, in the upper part golden dots glitter like stars. On the right are the figures in dark blue. The work deliberately allows many possible interpretations…
for the viewer. Applying the color to unprimed, brown and rough linen fabric creates a very large depth and a very special light. Glittering metallic pigments were used to create additional changes with different light incidence. The layered figures create dynamism and emerge more or less depending on the lighting situation. The edges of the canvas are also painted, so that a surprising three-dimensional impression is created from the side.

« Each of my pictures should appear as if a little bit of color had happened by chance, formed into a composition in a miraculous way, but could disappear again at any time. »
Alexandra Hiltl is a German painter and draftswoman whose works are widely exhibited worldwide. Her art moves between abstraction and figuration and is not specifically concerned with botanical or physiological accuracy, but rather with the "atmosphere of the moment". The beauty of living things touches her deeply, and Hiltl compositions reflect an emotional imagery. Working primarily in watercolor technique, her artistic practice requires extreme concentration as she allows the color to flow along with concentrated shaping.
