About this artwork
The complex numbers - based on the imaginary unit, the square root of minus one - open up new worlds for thinkers interested in mathematics. The number i makes it possible to solve equations that have no solution in real number space. In math, accepting that an equation has no solution is a no-go! Since calculating with these numbers, which were initially regarded as "senseless", initially appeared to be a mere game, one was all the more surprised…
that this "game" very often delivered valuable results or allowed already known results to be given a more satisfactory form. Carl Friedrich Gauss succeeded in interpreting complex numbers geometrically, and groundbreaking scientific concepts such as quantum field theory are based on them. Today you can often see the beauty and elegance inherent in these numbers. This work of art, with its playful complexity, also points to constantly exploring the limits of what is possible

« There is so much in life that we cannot control, but we can use our creativity to make something really interesting out of the chaos! »
Anja Stemmer is an emerging contemporary artist living in Germany. Influenced by expressionists such as Hans Hartung and Pierre Soulages, she uses strong colours and gestural elements, which she skilfully combines with the expressive possibilities of fluid colours. Her works balance spontaneous expression with the intention to convey courage, confidence and a sense of departure. She is passionate about experimenting with binders, pigments and substrates to further enhance these qualities.
