About this artwork
Quote from the speech by Prof. Dr. Pia Müller-Tamm on the occasion of receiving the 1st prize from the Karlsruhe Savings Bank Art Foundation
"With this setting, the artist creates a difference between the protagonist of the painting and us, the viewers in front of it. His acceptance of the world around him contrasts with our distance from it. But the painting doesn't stop there. Within the unassuming interior, an inner space opens up, promising… something different: a kind of communication takes place between the man and the record. The composer is clearly in a state of curious anticipation. He blows the dust off the record he is about to put on. The world of music, which the composer loves, opens up; the inner world of the man, who allows himself to feel closeness and emotion."
Barbara Breyer is a painter with a background in photography, whose roots lie in her studies of fine art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Her technique combines photographic vision with symbolically layered painting, applying acrylic in up to a thousand layers and artfully interweaving realistic and metaphorical imagery. Her works address emotional, social, and political processes and, through riddles and allegories, invite the viewer into a deep, contemplative exploration of complex, often contradictory feelings.
