About this artwork
This painting was inspired by a dawn sailing on a sailboat in which the artist left the Greek city of Volos to cross the Pagastikos gulf to reach the Sporades islands.
The effort of setting sail at dawn is rewarded by the thrill of seeing a new day dawn.
Near the city of Volos lies Mount Pelia. According to Greek mythology, the nymph Teti lived on Mount Pelia, a supernatural being, a goddess linked to water; according to a prophecy, his son… would be stronger than his father; for this reason, although both Zeus and Posidon had courted her, she was eventually promised to a mortal, Peleus. They were supposed to meet on Mount Pelia, but she didn't want to bond with a human being, so she transformed (all sea gods could transform into different forms) first into a lioness, then into a snake, then into fire and finally into sepia. And it was in this form that he finally met Peleus, and from their union the hero Achilles was born.
