About this artwork

After a long period of isolation after the Pandemics, I thought deeply about what changes should be made to us for the reconciliation of nature and civilization, and what lives individuals should live. I trust the historical theory of harmony between heaven and earth and man. And I believe that everything in the world creates new lives and opportunities by repeating encounters and separations amid constant change. I am deeply concerned about the… reckless development of this land under the name of economic growth and the fierce competition that leads to the struggle against everyone.
This work is a work in which finely torn newspapers are soaked in water, pasted on canvas, and painted with acrylic paint. The five colors mean different directions and express the harmony of human with heaven and earth through the meeting of straight lines and curves.

Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
