About this artwork
What to paint in 2021?
As I am a painter living in 2021, I am the first witness to what is happening to me, to what concerns us. For me, painting is a process that aims to make the viewer reflect on his condition as a human being. I try to link a colorful aesthetic that contrasts with the subject, more serious. My paintings can appear as decoration but the subject is less light. So here is the concept: A nursing couple facing the first wave hold… hands with love and hope in the face of the wave of deaths. In the background, the jungle from which the virus emerged, causing zoonosis. Devastated jungle which is the immediate consequence of our mass consumption.
We can also observe that only the faces are in warm colors, to mark the humanity of these two beings. The protective equipment - in plastic - clearly demonstrates the fact that we are no longer in symbiosis with our environment, our mother earth.
Stephane Dillies’ paintings have been internationally exhibited, from France to Qatar. The artist, who lives and works in Brussels, takes photographs of trash he finds around the world and transforms them into paintings. The pieces are entitled using the GPS coordinates of the garbage. Oriented towards images of chaos, his art reflects modern landscapes which reveal the futility of society. A figurative painter, he also creates abstract works using oils and acrylics with successive layers of glazes.
