About this artwork
This work is titled “Purple” in reference to a small, intimate detail about "her" that became a symbol of longing and emotional vulnerability at a pivotal moment in my life.
In many ways, “Purple” is a meditation on unattainable desires, on how the act of longing itself shapes our emotional landscape. Just as the color purple evokes complexity—neither fully warm nor cool—so too does the painting hold a tension between hope and acceptance, beauty… and melancholy. Her presence is felt not as a figure but as an atmosphere: subtle, transformative, and forever interwoven with the memory of wanting.
For me, this work represents one of the greatest desires I have experienced—a reminder of how some wishes endure beyond resolution, remaining vivid and charged within the spaces we create. “Purple” invites viewers to reflect on their own stories of longing and the bittersweet energy that comes with reaching for something just out of grasp.
Hanzallah Afridi, a Pakistan-born painter using oil and watercolor, draws from a self-taught background shaped by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s turmoil and his academic journey at UCLA. His technique balances minimalist forms with textured, layered brushwork, fusing figuration and abstraction to create tranquil yet complex surfaces. Afridi’s paintings masterfully embody the tension between serene outward appearance and concealed emotional turbulence, offering profound spaces for reflection, empathy, and a deep sense of humanity’s resilience.
