About this artwork
I wonder how much of an impact a piece of art can have in us. Is it a moment a in time, an experience that lasts for a few minutes? The kind that is described as “Stendhal Syndrome” when all our body reacts to what comes in through our eyes? a pupillary response, a bristled skin, a drop of sweat, a sudden feeling of coldness.
Or could it be a more lasting impact, the kind that keeps bringing that image to our minds again and again, the one that makes… us want to know more about the origin of that piece of art, who, why, when; even the type of impact that would push us to want to paint something inspired by that image that once changed our way of looking at art.
I can’t remember when was the first time that I saw “The Death of Marat” by Jacques-Louis David but certainly it must have been in a history textbook. I just know that I made it one of my favourite pieces of art at the time. When I finally saw the original I couldn’t believe how impressive, expressive and to
