About this artwork
My studio is located 70 meters from this peaceful river/canal. Hidden in the heart of Brittany, I can paint in absolute calm, the water gently flowing from the lock and the kingfishers silently swooping by.
I wanted to capture the softness of a peaceful moment by the water, where the light dances between shadows and reflections. Each oil brushstroke expresses my wonder at nature, blending impressionist touches and figurative forms. This painting… invites serenity, bringing a soothing atmosphere vibrant with gentle energy.

James MacKeown is an award-winning figurative artist living in France whose paintings are featured annually in solo exhibitions nationally, as well as in England, Ireland, and Switzerland. Through his art, he endeavors to convey the sublime in the intimacy of everyday and private life. The apparent improvisation in his works is in reality the result of an extreme and refined elaboration; the palette of colors meticulously constructed with soft gradients combined with a gentle touch. As such, MacKeown identifies as a "painter of intimacy". While he occasionally depicts surrealist subjects, they also follow his particular vision and philosophy of daily life.
