About this artwork
Soda cans are carefully designed mini artworks that are created to catch the eye of consumers while advertising a memorable brand or message. Once the contents are finished the can is disposed of without a second glance. The artist has always been fascinated by the discarded and enjoys combining them in new ways to create a new interpretation of its origins. To use them to build a human form is part of an ongoing exploration by the artist about the…
potential future that may occur as nature evolves to utilize the garbage we carelessly discard.
The usual process of sculpture is to start with a solid block of material and then carve out the the hidden artwork. However, this sculpture was created by forming a wire frame leaving the interior hollow, and then a skin of strips of soda can (all cut by hand) was woven over the the outside. The process is immensely time consuming and this sculpture represents nearly 700 hours of work.
