About this artwork
A few years ago, I was honored to be the Artist in Residence at KindlingsFest on stunning Orcas Island. And decided to create a painting that would reflect both the festival's theme and the island's rugged beauty. While sketching ideas, I remembered a sculpture I saw on a trip to Florence a few years earlier—Michelangelo's Aurora. And then I found an unusual angle of the same statue in an art history book I've had since college art history class.…
My idea came together—old master's sensibility set in a contemporary island setting. And then I found the perfect model—a barista at a In crafting this oil painting, I sought to capture a serene moment of introspection and quietude in natural surroundings. The subject, relaxed yet contemplative, lounges against a rugged stone, embodying the contrast and harmony between human form and nature's steadfastness. I intended for this painting to bring a peaceful, grounding energy to any space.
